Job losses are expected at Brisbane's only commercial AM talkback station in the wake of the merger between the Fairfax and Macquarie radio networks, with content from Sydney's 2GB expected to be networked to Brisbane.

It's understood chief operating officer of the merged FRN/MRN entity Adam Lang arrived in Brisbane on Thursday afternoon to begin individual discussions.

Wayne "Waynee Poo" Roberts is a Brisbane radio institution, and spent most of the 80s at 4BC.

"I don't know a lot of the people who are in there but I feel for them that they could be losing their jobs," he said.

"There are less and less jobs for broadcasting for these people so it'll be very difficult for them to line up a job in that medium – virtually impossible, I'd say."

Roberts said technology had changed the way people listen to radio.

"I think networking is the way of the future, there's nothing much you can really do about it," he said.

"But people can use their smartphones to flick between stations and avoid ads – people in Brisbane now can go out and source what makes them feel comfortable and what makes them feel good."

Announcer Michael Price, who co-hosted the Afternoons program in 2014, said in his first stint at the station he had the good fortune to work closely with Roberts, Greg Cary, John Miller and Ken Guy.

"They all taught me great radio and life lessons, but it was the late great John Miller and Ken Guy who suggested I turn my obvious personal interest in the then senior copywriter into something more formal," he said.

"Therefore my greatest gift from 4BC was meeting and eventually marrying my wife Nikki. Twenty years later I'm still grateful to these two gents for their suggestion over a few beers off the wood at the Brekky Creek."

Price also credited former breakfast presenters Peter Dick and Jamie Dunn as superstars in their own rights.

One of Brisbane's earliest radio stations, 4BC was founded by businessman John Beals Chandler in 1930.

Owner of the electrical appliance business Chandlers, he wanted the station to drive demand for his radio sets.

Chandler later went on to become Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1940 to 1942.

The possible changes at 4BC come after the newsroom at its Sydney sister station 2UE broadcast its final bulletin at 6pm on Thursday.

News director Matt McDonald thanked listeners and his staff.

"It is the end of an era and a particularly sad day here at 2UE," he said at the end of the bulletin.

"So many of the country's brightest journalists have cut their teeth here at 2UE and anyone who's ever worked here will tell you they wear it as a badge of honour."
