A man and woman both in their 40s were discovered by a mutual friend at their house at 2pm on Friday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Kim Steven said the two had not shown up for work on Thursday and Friday.
"Both persons worked in businesses in Devonport, it appears they hadn't been at work on Thursday, so we're trying to piece together a timeline from midnight Wednesday through to 2pm when they were discovered," he said.
Detective Inspector Steven said the friend went to the property after not being able to contact the two.
Police are describing the incident as a "tragic family violence incident".
While investigations are ongoing, Tasmania Police did not believe there was any other person involved in the incident.
The man, in his 40s, was found outside the residence with a gunshot wound, while the woman, also in her 40s, was discovered in the shed on the property.
It is understood the families of the deceased had been notified.
The two did not have any children and were the sole residents of the Wilmot property.
Forensic teams will remain on the property until midday tomorrow.
