Typism is dedicated to the art of making words readable and beautiful and will hear from seven expert practitioners in the field of fonts.

Organiser Dominique Falla heads up the Bachelor of Digital Media at Griffith University and recently completed a doctorate in tactile typography.

"Now that everyone has a computer everyone can lay out typography, however badly," she said.

"So graphic designers have to find ways of standing out from everybody else's typed layout."

Ms Falla said choosing the right font was like choosing the right outfit.

"When you go to a business meeting you should probably dress differently than if you were going to the beach," she said.

"If you were doing a corporate communication you would use a sensible typeface and if you were doing an ad for a children's party you'd use a sensible typeface."

Ms Falla said there were a few commonly derided typefaces, such as the dreaded Comic Sans, but they were disliked for good reason.

"Comic Sans is like a politician showing up saying please vote for me while dressed like a clown, it just can't be taken seriously," she said.

"I think Jokerman is what it is a joke. Any more than one or two words and it looks crazy."

Ms Falla said custom brush lettering and calligraphy was a hot trend in typography and the Typism conference would feature emerging practitioners including Brisbane's Jasmine Dowling and Melbourne's Carla Hackett.

"These guys are artists, but with type," she said.

"Letters and calligraphy is something they play with like a fine artist would play with and explore shape, colour and expression," she said.

"They're often used by advertisers to create a custom look to make their ad stand out more."

Ms Falla said typography was an obsession for many with the hashtag #typeporn linked to all manner of interesting and original designs on social media.

Dominique Falla's Typography Tips

1. Limit yourself to two fonts per document – vary the size of the font rather than the typeface itself in order to emphasise the most important aspects. "Think about the hierarchy of the information you're trying to communicate," Ms Falla said. "What do you want them to look at first? Make that the biggest".

2. Serif scripts are best for long manuscripts such as books. If you're expecting people to do a lot of reading on screen, choose a sans-serif as the small "feet" of serifs can tend to look cluttered when seen as pixels on screens. Calibri is a simple, friendly sans-serif.

3.Don't use all upper case letters in a brush or cursive script.

4.Be wary of free fonts downloaded from the internet as they can be buggy. "You're better off investing in one or two really good fonts and getting to know how to use them really well," Ms Falla said.
