The teen, who was just 14 at the time of the incident in August 2013 and as a juvenile cannot be named, pleaded guilty before the Children's Court of Queensland at Toowoomba to committing a negligent act causing harm.
He had initially been charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm but those charges were withdrawn by the Crown after the substituted charge was put before the court.
The charge arises from an incident during a party involving a number of young people at a Harristown residence in August 2013.
Police claim the boy threw a liquid accelerant on to open flames, causing an explosion that left two other teenagers with serious burns injuries.
