The Dogs finally ended their three-month search for a new chief executive when they announced on Wednesday morning the appointment of senior Nike executive David Stevenson as Simon Garlick's replacement. Stevenson will not however assume his responsibilities until August as he relocates to Melbourne from the United States.
Stevenson has been part of Nike management for the past 17 years, ascending to the role of vice president of sales for the sporting goods manufacturer's emerging markets. He has been based in Oregon, but decided to return home to Melbourne to take up the position at the Whitten Oval. He was selected by a special sub-committee from a short-list of 12 applicants. The Bulldogs had used international recruiting giant Egon Zehnder in their selection process, while the final round of interviews were watched by AFL general manager of clubs and league operations Travis Auld. AFL boss Gillon McLachlan also spoke to Stevenson prior to final decision being made.
Stevenson told the Bulldogs website that he was aiming to make the club a leader in the community. "The concept of a united team with everyone playing their role is critically important to me and I want to leverage all of the great skills and experience of the team both on and off field to help us achieve success." Stevenson said.
"This starts with our devoted members and supporters, but relies on each of our players, coaches, staff and board members to perform at their best. One of the priorities for the Club under my leadership will be to make stronger connections with women and girls, to inspire and enable them to play, support, contribute, volunteer and lead in the community and with our great club."
"When I look at programs as diverse as the Ballarat initiative, the Sons of the West men's health program and the Bulldogs Friendly Schools program, I know that I will be working with a motivated and dedicated team of people, led by a highly ambitious Board."
Garlick had been chief executive since 2010, resigning in January after a turmultous few months for the Bulldogs in which they sakced coach Brendan McCartney, and traded captain Ryan Griffen and Brownlow medalist Adam Cooney. The chief executive duties will be continue to be filled by club president Peter Gordon and acting chief executive Michael Quinn until Stevenson commences in the role.
