Lord Mayor Graham Quirk's suggestion is one that many would consider left-field, but he believes it will be what the River City is known for.
The city's top councillor says the Asia Pacific Screen Awards will "ultimately define Brisbane".
Brisbane was made the permanent host of the awards two years ago, however despite its billing as an Asian equivalent of the Oscars, they have yet to capture the imagination of the city's residents.
The awards are held at the Brisbane City Hall in December, and attract guests and media from around the world. The 2015 event will be the ninth time they are staged.
"It covers 70 countries, 4.5 billion people and half the world's film industry and the awards are based permanently in Brisbane," Cr Quirk told 4BC radio on Thursday.
"It's one of those events, it's probably going to take 15 years but I think it will ultimately define Brisbane."
While Cr Quirk said eye-catching architecture would help grow Brisbane's reputation, the screen awards were at the top of his list.
"We're never going to have, obviously, the world's tallest building or anything like that. And if you do, someone's going to overtake you anyway so it's a bit of a nonsense in my view," he said.
One city landmark that won't be changing anytime soon is King George Square the Lord Mayor insisted.
Despite calls from some to return a fountain or grass to the square, Cr Quirk ruled it out, saying the previous fountain leaked and grassed areas were often cordoned off for preservation.
"For those who think there should be all sorts of other stuff there, I'd ask them to come in when we have major events in that space and tell me where we're going to fit all the people," he said.
