Stephen Dank, the architect of Essendon's supplements program, faces a lifetime ban from the AFL after the AFL anti-doping tribunal found him guilty of 10 of the more than 30 charges he faced.

The tribunal on Friday revealed that it had cleared him of administering thymosin beta 4 to the players but chairman David Jones was "comfortably satisfied" that the biochemist was guilty of attempting to traffick hexarelin "to third parties, namely to Essendon athletes and support persons of the club" and "assisting, encouraging and aiding, abetting and covering up" use of the drug contrary to the anti-doping code.

He was also found guilty of a charge relating to an official at the Carlton Football Club and involving Australian baseball.

Dank was also found guilty on two of three charges of attempting to traffick to Essendon players humanofort, a cocktail of drugs, including insulin growth factor 1, insulin growth factor 2, mechano growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, follistatin and thymosin beta 4.

While Dank was informed of the verdicts, the AFL tribunal will reconvene to determine a punishment, almost certainly meaning he won't be allowed to work in the sport again. The NRL has already banned Dank.

The latest developments could influence whether the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority appeals the decision by the AFL anti-doping tribunal to clear the 34 past and present Essendon players charged with being administered thymosin beta 4. It has until Tuesday to do so.

ASADA chief Ben McDevitt said after the players were cleared that the ruling on Dank would help him make "a more informed" decision.

In relation to Dank, the tribunal found that he was not guilty of three infractions relating to thymosin beta 4 and Essendon. These were charges of administration, attempted administration to the Essendon players between January and September of 2012, and assisting, encouraging, aiding, abetting and covering up and/or other type of complicity in connection with the administration of the drug.

He was also found not guilty of administering thymosin beta 4 "in injectable form".

Dank also faced several charges relating to selective androgen receptor modulators. He was found not guilty of four charges, including actual possession, constructive possession, possession by purchase, assisting and encouraging in connection with players, competition or training at Essendon.

In terms of human growth hormone, SARM, mechano growth factor and CJC-1295 trafficking violations, it was found, to comfortable satisfaction, that he trafficked the drug between March 2012 and October 2012 to a Carlton Football Club official.

Blues chief executive Steven Trigg said he had clarified Carlton's position about its former part-time employee with the AFL in November last year.

"At the time, I clarified that the AFL had confirmed to me it did not have any issue with the Carlton Football Club in relation to the matter. That remains the case," he said.

"In early 2013, when the investigation into Essendon began, Carlton initiated a thorough review of its high-performance program. The results of the review were independently verified and showed that there were no grounds for us to be concerned. That also remains the case."

In terms of CJC-1295 violations, Dank was found not guilty of trafficking to the Gold Coast Suns and support persons of the club. However, he was found guilty of attempting to traffick the drug at the club and aiding, encouraging and abetting in its use.

In terms of the three charges relating to hexarelin, SARM, CJC-1295 and GHRP6, he was found guilty of trafficking in the sport of baseball.

Dank also faced charges relating to his dealings with customers at the Medical Rejuvenation Clinic during his time with the Bombers.

He was found guilty of trafficking in CJC-1295, GHRP6, SARM (s22), hexarelin, mechano growth factor and IGF1.

AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said it had been a complex case for tribunal members Wayne Henwood, John Nixon and Jones.

"The circumstances surrounding the case have been extremely difficult, given the amount of information and the number of parties involved, and the professionalism and diligence of the tribunal has been greatly appreciated by the AFL," he said.
