Of Newcastle local Tibor Racsits and his 12-year-old daughter Kiara being set upon by a gang of youths outside Charlestown Square last weekend. Of the dad, arriving on the scene to protect his little girl, copping cracked ribs and various other injuries as the teens wailed into him. Of Kiara screaming for them to stop as the ambush continued.

Mata'utia then showed the footage to his footballing brothers, Knights trio Sione, Chanel and Pat.

"I thought it was disgusting," said Peter, who has been an unlikely hero for the Dragons during their recent wins. "And to find out it was in Newcastle, where I'm from .. it made it worse as well."

Rather than stand by and do nothing, as many witnesses of the attack did, the Mata'utia clan decided to do something about it. So the brothers called their manager, Jai Takua of Black Money Enterprises, who made some calls of his own until he found the number of the victims.

The result is the brothers, in an attempt to take their mind off recent troubles, will roll out the red and blue carpet for Tibor and Kiara for Sunday's Newcastle-Parramatta clash. The quartet will pick up them up for lunch on game day, escort them into the private box they have organised and then take them into the sheds and after-game presentations to help brighten a dark week. Given the Racsits are also Eels fans, they might even arrange for the pair to duck into the adjoining dressing room after proceedings.

Newcastle is renowned for getting behind its football team when times are tough. This is the Knights' way of returning the favour.

"Being local people, we just wanted to get in touch with them and help out," Sione said.

"That's what we want to do, make them happy and forget about what happened.

"We're trying to be more involved with the community, they have really been behind us over the years and this is a chance for us to do our bit."

If there was a criticism of Wayne Bennett's time in the Hunter - apart from the fact the side performed below expectations - it was that the team had lost touch with the community. The Mata'utias want to do their bit to reconnect.

"When I received that phone call it was mindblowing," Tibor said.

"I'm actually an Eels supporter. It's ironic they ring me up the weekend we play the Knights. I'll change teams for this weekend.

"They must be very family-orientated people, It's great what they've done, it certainly takes my mind off things for a little while. I've got a few grazes and bruises on me, which will heal in the next couple of weeks, but emotionally, I broke down three days ago. It has shaken us up a bit."

Kiara added: "It's made me really happy, it's really surprising."

The Mata'utias could soon be rivalling the Burgess brothers as the most talented siblings in rugby league. But it's their humility and desire to be involved in the community that makes them equally valuable to a club trying to reconnect with its fan base.

"I know the NRL are pushing the anti-bullying campaign," said Peter, who made his NRL debut for the Knights. "Being in Newcastle, people say 'that's just what you get there', and we thought they deserved better.

"We just like to make a difference and help where we can and we found this to be a good way to help in this sort of situation.

"It's a great club, everyone's at the footy. It's one town, one team. I read some comments on the video and seeing how people feel about it got to me as well. I thought we could do something for the father and daughter and help them out."

Three teens, two aged 15 and one aged 14, were arrested by Lake Macquarie detectives on Friday for their role in the incident.

"That's what shocked me about the whole thing, the age of the kids that did it," Tibor said.

"I'm 41 and I'm a bit old school, I didn't think stuff like that actually happened. The future doesn't hold much for those kids unless they get into some sort of rehabilitation.

"It's nice to have Newcastle behind us, especially the Knights. At least something good has come out of all of this."
