Mount Isa PCYC, Camooweal Jockey Club, St Kieran’s School (Care of Mount Isa Community Development Association), Christian Outreach centre and MIGATE were presented with vital funding that will see the completion of many worthy community-minded projects.
Mayor Tony McGrady said providing aid to ensure these community projects became a reality was something he looked forward to throughout the year.
“Council is delighted to support these organisations,” Cr McGrady said.
“The grants will be used for various initiatives, including responsible water usage, sun-safe projects and recognising the hard work of trainees and apprentices.”
Pastor Keith Christie of the Christian Outreach Centre said his organisation was very thankful for the funding.
“Our programs help to build relationships, not only between parents and their children, but also between parents across the city.”
“We have extended our services and expanded our facilities to cater to the large numbers attending our programs each week, but the ability to keep patrons out of the harsh sun has always been a factor.”
Mr Christie said the funding provided would help to cover the cost of shade sails for the Christian Outreach centre’s outdoor decking and grassed area, with the hope it would soon also shade an outdoor playground.
Round 2 of Mount Isa City Council Community Grants will open in August.
Mount Isa PCYC
OPERATION BEAT THE HEAT
WATER FOUNTAIN RENEWAL
Mount Isa PCYC will use funds to replace the existing water fountains which are old and require excessive repairs and maintenance. The fountains are used by community members attending the Family Fun Park in the mornings and on weekends, as well as Skate Park attendees and Out of School Hours Care/Vacation Care students attending the PCYC (up to 100 per day).
Camooweal Jockey Club
CAMOOWEAL JOCKEY CLUB
SHADE PROJECT
Funds will be used to buy a marquee to use for shade at both the April cricket weekend and the August race meeting held in Camooweal. The cricket weekend brings around 100 people to town for the event and the race meeting brings around 400 people into the Camooweal community.
It is very important to the club as a safety aspect to provide enough shade for the number of people attending.

SUSTAINING OUR
CHILDREN’S PLAYING FIELD
& WATER CONSERVATION
PROJECT
The St Kieran’s School P&F will drill a bore to water the St Kieran’s school oval. Mount Isa’s current water situation is having a detrimental effect on the school oval with the grass dying due to lack of water. Watering the oval with bore water is an environmentally responsible way to keep the grass growing, reduce lead uptake and conserve our drinking water. The oval is the venue for the annual St Kieran’s Mother’s Day fete, a major fundraising initiative and social event for the Mount Isa community.

INSTALLATION OF SHADE
SAIL (STAGE 1)
Funds received will help to purchase shade sails to cover the fenced grass area of the facility. In the hotter months the facility is running out of space for families to gather. A deck has been built at the
front of the building which includes a fenced off grass area with the intention of putting in a playground with shade sails to help give protection from the sun and heat.
MIGATE
2014 MIGATE TRAINING
AWARDS
The MIGATE training awards formally recognise people who are excelling in their chosen fields and the local businesses helping them to attain their career goals. The sponsorship funds will used to host the event and provide prizes in recognition of the effort put in by host trainers, trainees and apprentices. The awards also demonstrate how traineeships and apprenticeships add real value to the local community by raising the level of skill and experience of Mount Isa’s workforce.
