Richmond midfielder Anthony Miles says the club has been rocked by the latest injury to unlucky Tiger Chris Knights, as he prepares for a lengthy recovery from hamstring surgery.

Knights returned from an 18-month layoff to play in the 79-point win against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday after a series of injury complications, only to be subbed out in the second quarter with a hamstring concern.

The club got the bad news on Monday as scans showed damage to Knights' hamstring tendon, which will require surgery and a 10-12 week recovery.

Miles said the injury-plagued Knights had been "extremely diligent" during his rehabilitation from the original injury to his patella tendon to play on Saturday.

"For him to go down, I think it's hit the playing group really hard, thoughts are with Chris at the moment," he said. "He was pretty flat after the game."

Richmond will play Melbourne this Friday night at the MCG and there is already some discussion over whether Demon midfielder Bernie Vince will employ the controversial tagging efforts he used against Adelaide.

Vince relied on every trick in the book to keep Adelaide star Patrick Dangerfield to just 16 possessions on Saturday and he could look to repeat the dose this week against Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

Miles said the Demons had been exceptional in their pressure on the Crows in their 25-point loss and believed the Tigers would be ready for more of the same on Friday night.

He said the Richmond midfielders had come a long way in protecting their captain on the ball, particularly since the Collingwood game last year, when Magpies tagger Brent Macaffer nullified Cotchin with a heavy tagging job.

The Tigers would look to use blocks around stoppages to help their captain out, he said.

"I think 'Cotch' has dealt with tags really well in the last couple of years especially. So he'll work his way through it, hopefully we can give 'Cotch' a bit of a chop-out as well if he [Vince] does go to him," he said.

Richmond is likely to spend another week without gun midfielder Brett Deledio, who is still recovering from an ongoing calf concern.

Midfielder Reece Conca is back training and a chance to play against Melbourne after a hamstring injury, while defender Dylan Grimes is expected to miss another week.
