Performers entering the Mount Isa Discovery Holiday Parks Busking Competition from Monday, May 11, will compete for a prize pool of more than $7000.
Headspace youth engagement officer Emily Brodie said the busking contest would be held in West Street but it may expand across the central business district depending on the number of buskers who entered.
The top five performers will be determined by votes and will then perform on the main stage of Isa Fest on Saturday, May 16, Ms Brodie said.
Ms Brodie said the contest would be used to promote businesses and improve foot traffic in West Street.
The managers for Sponsor Discovery Holiday Parks Argylla, Rod and Sherry Simmons, envisaged the competition as a “mini Tamworth” – which supported the same busking vibe.
Mr Simmons believed the busking competition could attract interstate performers.
“What I find with the buskers is they generally travel,” he said.
Mob FM program director Jacob Takurit was the first to sign up for the busking competition and urges people to tell him what songs they want performed.
“I just want to encourage the community to get behind it,’’ he said.
“Because it’s only the second year [of Isa Fest] we want to make this [busking competition] a big part of it.”
Mr Takurit urged for other buskers to compete. Buskers can nominate by May 4, by phoning Headspace Mount Isa on 4437 1300, emailing reception@headspacemtisa.org.au or visiting the office at the corner of West and Isa Streets.
