League tag is a non-contact version of rugby league and is for women aged 16 years old and up.
NRL game development officer Laurie Taylor has been working behind the scenes to get the new competition happening.
“This is the initial cry out for it,” Taylor said.
“The first response has been from club land. This game differs from touch football in the essence that all the rugby league rules are the same. We really have to stress that in big bold lettering that this is a non-contact sport.”
The NRL is holding a free come and try event on Saturday at Alec Inch Oval between noon and 1.30pm where individuals and teams can participate to see how the game is played and express interest.
“We want all clubs having a female team so that they can participate in a competition annually. We want this to continue each year so the women can be a part of Mount Isa Rugby League.
“In the North West we haven’t got any opportunities except in under 16s for tackle, where seven girls are participating in that. These other girls don’t have anywhere to hone their skills.”
By the end of the year, the MIRL aims to have a women’s league tag competition in conjunction with the rugby league season as well as run junior league tag for boys and girls in the off-season.
“Mount Isa is right behind it. We want MIRL to have a full day on Saturday starting in the morning with games at 11am and 2pm. Essentially, we’re looking for women interested to play league tag, turning 16 years old from 2015 and up.”
