Our crack (pot) panel reassembles to run the rule over all the happenings from round five of the AFL.
The panel:
Peter Bell (two-time AFL premiership player, Radio 6PR announcer, advocate for bathing in minty toothpaste); Frizz Ferguson (6PR producer, WAFL guru); Simon White (WAtoday chief puppet hater); Paul Entwistle (Rant merchant extraordinaire); Brendan Foster (WAtoday's resident grumpy old man); David Prestipino (WAtoday wine writer, footy tragic).
Belly:
1. James Kelly. Ouch. Say no more
2. "Mr Gray will see you now". Robbie Gray is as entertaining a footballer as there is in the game.
3. Yeo Elliot. Stay in the midfield.
Frizz:
1.There is an expiry date for coaches. I'm pretty sure I have some tinned fruit that is breaking records for the longest serving item in my pantry, but even that would be bad and sour by now.
2. Just because you're ridiculously close to a goal, you still have to put a full effort in - as Brisbane's Allen Christensen worked out the hard way on the weekend.
3. Fremantle can survive just about anything. Losing Michael Walters and Matthew Pavlich could have put them in a spot of bother, I know it's only the Dees, but that's a fair fighting effort from the remainder of the team.
Whitey:
1. The sight of Collingwood in second spot is almost as surprising as that of the Bulldogs in third. Over the next six weeks - against Geelong, Richmond, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Melbourne and GWS - the Pies could either consolidate a top-four spot or slip off the radar entirely.
2. After hearing Luke Darcy and co. spend most of Saturday night's last quarter rabbiting on about Hawthorn's precision accuracy, I'm waiting for a beaten opposing coach to start his press conference with the words "fricking lasers".
3. I fight a strong desire to close my eyes every time Danyle Pearce drops the ball from his hand towards his boot. And I don't always win.
All for one and one for...wait, why are we here again?
Vent-wistle:
1. Not only do players not want to go to Carlton, judging by the performance on Friday night most of the players at Carlton don't want to be there either.
2. Who let the dogs out? Luke Beveridge. The growl is back at the Western Bulldogs and they not only have a game plan but, alarmingly for the other 17 teams, also belief in it. They have a scent of finals action.
3. Rugby is safe in Queensland, in the short term at least, after the Q-Clash. Any team that makes the Gold Coast Suns look good surely has a lot of work ahead of it. Brisbane has staked a strong claim on the 2015 wooden spoon.
Fossie:
1. Floyd Mayweather would have been chuffed with the left Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge landed on Roos player Andrew Swallow's chin. It was thuggery and Jordan Lewis' attempt moments later to decapitate Todd Goldstein was also cowardly.
2. There wouldn't be too many AFL tragics who would begrudge a Western Bulldogs resurgence. The Doggies will probably run out of puff at some stage during the season, but it's been a hoot watching them so far.
3. Essendon's Dustin Fletcher will probably be eligible for the pension before he hangs up his boots. The 40-year-old (well, in four days anyway) covered more ground than just about every other player in the Dons' win over the Saints.
Presto:
1. 2015 is resembling 2014, when anyone could beat anyone on any given day. Bring it on.
2. The GWS Giants still have a lot of growing to do… especially when their backs are against the wall.
3. No one disrespected Mick Malthouse in his 715-game milestone week - except for his players on Friday night. Pathetic performance.
