Boyd was the star off-season recruit for Bennett but has yet to play a game back at the Broncos after suffering the injury during pre-season. He was due to be out for a further eight weeks but returns two months ahead of schedule.

Bennett said he wasn't surprised that Boyd had fast-tracked himself back to the NRL, saying he had been dedicated in his recovery and the signs were strong when he resumed running in early April.

"I think we always felt he would be on schedule," Bennett said. "A month ago he started running with the team and did some ball work, there wasn't an issue.

"It was a five- to seven-month injury and he is right on five months now. He's had no hiccups in his rehab, it has all gone perfectly.

"He's a very diligent person, a very committed guy, so he has made it work."

It's good news for Maroons coach Mal Meninga as well, with the 27-year-old a walk-up for Queensland assuming he can put together a few games before Monday week's team selection ahead of the May 27 series opener.

Boyd will play fullback for Brisbane but resume his deadly wing combination with centre Greg Inglis when the Maroons lift the lid on their game one squad.

It will be almost seven years since Boyd last played for the Broncos when he runs out against Penrith at Suncorp Stadium.
