The Western Bulldogs blitzed the Saints in the first half and three goals from Jake Stringer helped them to a commanding position at halftime when they led 10.4 (64) to 2.3 (15).
And, when Stringer booted his fourth of the match early in the third term, to extend the Bulldogs lead to a game-high 55 points, the match looked all but over.

However, St Kilda had other ideas and a seven-goal-to-one third quarter had them right back in the game at the final change.
Early goals from Ayce Cordy and Mitch Honeychurch got the Bulldogs off to a flying start in the last quarter and it looked like they would be able to hang on comfortably.
Enter Jack Billings.
Billings booted his first goal at the 7 minute mark of the final term and after 15 minutes of the fourth quarter he had had four shots at goal for the Saints for 2.1.
He went on to pick up 10 possessions, four of those contested, five inside fifties and three goals in the final term as the Saints came marching home in style.
After Tom Hickey had marked directly in front and goaled to put the Saints in front at the 23 minute mark, Billings pounced on a kick from skipper Nick Riewoldt to seal the match a couple of minutes later with his third goal of the term.
David Armitage was instrumental in the Saints win as well as he picked up possessions at will. Early in the third quarter he had already passed the 30 disposal mark and Armitage finished with 45 touches, 16 of those contested, and eight clearances.
Midfielder Liam Picken had another good game for the Bulldogs with 28 possessions and two goals, while Stringer's sensational first half saw him kick four goals and almost pull down the mark of the year.
However, their efforts were in vain thanks to the Saints comeback and the last-quarter magic from Jack Billings.
