Greater Western Sydney have scored the biggest win in their history, producing a stirring finish to run over the top of reigning premiers Hawthorn at Spotless Stadium.

In a game of momentum swings, GWS trailed by 10 points to the classy Hawks at the final change but, on the back of enormous pressure and intensity, produced a five-goals-to-two fourth quarter effort to win by 10 points in front of a vocal 13,556 fans, the club's second biggest home crowd.

The Hawks didn't seem to miss the leadership of suspended pair Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis early on as they built a comfortable 29-14 lead at the first break. But GWS staged a big second quarter comeback, conceding the first two goals but stringing together the next five to yank a 74.46 to 6.6.42 halftime lead.

The Hawks won the third term six goals to four, but the Giants were very much in the game at the final break and still seemingly full of run. That run combined with fierce determination to score a coming-of-age victory.

Star forward Jeremy Cameron kicked seven goals in a complete performance, aided by numerous contributors led by the club's big off-season recruits, Ryan Griffen and Joel Patfull. Tom Scully, Shane Mumford and Callan Ward were also exemplary.

Hawthorn's experienced core, including Sam Mitchell and Shaun Burgoyne, did their best to edge the Hawks ahead but each time they were thwarted by a swift Giants response.

Early on, it seemed the home side was in for a tough night. Hawthorn's ball movement was effective and plentiful, resulting in a free-running Isaac Smith nailing two goals to underpin an unanswered 16-point lead.

The whirlwind abated long enough for the Giants to get moving with two goals in two minutes to Devon Smith, the first the culmination of a long and daring chain of handballs and a sweet 40 metre shot from Smith, the second a snap from the right pocket proving the small forward's radar was on.

The gap was two points but, with 40 more possessions for the term, the Hawks were able to dictate terms and drove home the advantage with late goals to Jarryd Roughead and a runaway siren-beater by Billy Hartung.

A combination of Hawthorn's smooth passing and controlled tempo football threatened to open the floodgates early in the second quarter, as Mitchell and Jack Gunston got on the scoresheet to stretch the gap to 27 points.

But the Giants hit back with 25 straight points. When they broke out of defence in the 28th minute and Adam Treloar ran the ball into the goal square and put it through, they had charged their way into the lead for the first time, 45-42, on the back of five goals without response.

The Giants had 17 inside 50s to 10 for the second term and a kicking efficiency of 82 percent, their best of the season.

The third quarter started much like the previous two, with Hawthorn sprinting out of the blocks to score 17 clear points amid six inside 50s to nil in the first 10 minutes.

However, an explosive period by Scully spurred the home side to a three-goal repost, including two goals to Cameron and one to the former top draft pick. The burst came after Cyril Rioli and Tomas Bugg became locked in a vicious push and shove reminiscent of the Hawks' spiteful clash with North Melbourne last round.

The rest of the term was fiercely contested but the Hawks came out on top, kicking three goals to one to grab an 81-71 lead at the final rest.

Hawthorn were in the box seat early in the last quarter and kicked the first, but a free kick goal to James Stewart and an opportunistic goal to Cameron brought it back to just a kick the difference.

That kick came in stunning style from Griffen, from deep in the pocket, in the 15th minute. The Giants fitness and keenness then told and they peppered the Hawks defence with five behinds, followed by a strong mark and goal to Cameron. Smith's snapped goal in the 23rd minute - his third - made the lead 18 points and they held on for a famous win.
