Holmes sweet Holmes. The Cronulla Sharks have overcome a controversial video referee decision to edge the Gold Coast Titans in extra time at Robina thanks to the golden boot of their rising young winger.

With scores locked at 22-22 at fulltime, Valentine Holmes would add to his two-try haul with a decisive field goal to get his side over the line in the second-straight golden point match of the round, following New Zealand's win over Parramatta.

It took just two minutes of extra time for Holmes to step up to the mark. He found a spot in the pocket and produced a quick-release snap like Steph Curry, belting the ball through to make it 23-22 and give the Sharks their fourth win of the season.

It had looked as if fortune would favour the Titans when Sharks centre Blake Ayshford was denied what looked a certain try in the 62nd minute. He pounced on Josh Hoffman's try-line fumble only to be denied in another confounding decision by a video referee.

It mattered not in the end, with Anthony Don scoring late to level the scores for the Titans before Aidan Sezer's sideline kick to win the game in regular time was waved away. Holmes, still just 19, would make no such mistake with his clinical conclusion.

It ended in a flurry but didn't start that way. Neither side could break a 0-0 deadlock through 23 minutes and the frustration was beginning to build.

Nate Myles, doing his best Justin Hodges impersonation, gave Sharks hooker Michael Ennis a head-rub after he dropped the ball, with Ennis replying by pinging the Steeden straight into the substantial forehead of the Titans prop.

Even Myles would suggest it would be hard to miss from that range - 'fair chance of hitting it' was his comment to the referee - and Ennis duly connected, only to give away the penalty and helping the Titans to first points through Ryan James.

There would be more to come with nine minutes left in the half as winger David Mead pounced on the loose pass just five metres out from his line and pinned the ears back, sprinting the 95m to dive over in the corner.

A Sezer penalty had the Sharks struggling to stay afloat as they trailed 14-0 heading into the break before Holmes hot-stepped his way over in the right-hand corner, trimming the deficit to 10 at halftime.

A Titans penalty six minutes into the second stanza put the home side back up by a pair of converted tries as the Sharks continued to struggle for any real sense of momentum in slippery, showery conditions.

But some possession and the veteran pairing of Ennis and Luke Lewis would get them back in the contest, with Lewis doing his Origin hopes no harm as he crashed over near the sticks to bring his side back within six.

The Gold Coast were trying to win by a thousand cuts and another Sezer penalty would give the Titans a momentary eight-point advantage before a mistake from Don under the high ball would donate a second try to Holmes, leaving the Sharks trailing by two.

Hoffman breathed a sigh of relief when his knock on, right on his own line, was saved by the video referee. Ayshford was convinced he has scored and replays showed he had good reason to be confident, only for the red light to be lit up at Robina.

Will Zillman (knee) and Mead (hamstring) were already off before Myles would find out his head isn't made of Kevlar after all, wandering off with 10 minutes remaining after taking a heavy knock.

The Sharks hammered away and were finally given their reward, with Ennis turning Jack Bird inside with seven minutes to go and put the visitors up 22-18.

But halfback Kane Elgey would quickly add to his reputation as a star of the future, firing a superb ball for Don to cross in the corner and level the scores at 22-all, with Sezer's sideline conversion sailing wide and setting up extra time.
