The Dragons joined a four-team logjam at the top of the NRL ladder after Benji Marshall and Gareth Widdop orchestrated a 32-18 victory against the Canberra Raiders in Wollongong on Sunday.

The win takes the Dragons to the top of the ladder alongside Melbourne, Brisbane and North Queensland in an equal share of the lead, four points clear of the next-best teams after producing their best attacking display of the season.

Paul McGregor's men came into match as the worst attacking team in the competition averaging just 13.5 points per game over the first nine rounds.

However the Dragons didn't have to purely rely on the defence, which is ranked No.1 in the NRL, finding their mojo in attack to register their seventh win of the season.

"I didn't enjoy that last eight or 10 minutes to be honest, we played a little bit frantic because we hadn't been in that position before where we've been in front by a few points," McGregor said.

"It's just another part of our education as a group where we really need to be clinical in closing out games, but it was nice to come down the stretch and be in front by 14 points. We scored some nice tries today, I thought our halves were the difference in a few areas."

Marshall and Widdop combined to dictate terms and strangle the Raiders with their kicking game, continuing to develop what is fast becoming one of the best halves combinations in the NRL.

Marshall kicked a 40-20, set up a try and scored one of his own, while Widdop finished with a try, three try assists and six from seven with the boot to finish with 16 points for the match..

"You have to remember Benji only joined the team halfway through last year and Gareth was new to the club last year," McGregor said.

"Josh [Dugan] played a lot of centre last year and now he's playing fullback, so the three of them have only played 10 games together this year and a little together last year.

"They are developing, they're growing and they're enjoying each other's company on and off the field. When you're doing that and working hard .... a lot of credit has to go to our middle because they have to play off the platform they lay and our middle is doing a fantastic job for them to be the players they are at the moment."

However the win could come at a price with Marshall failing to finish the match with a left knee injury he picked up in the final minutes, while his halves partner hobbled from the field at full-time after a late leg injury of his own.

But McGregor is confident the pair will be available for selection after the bye this weekend.

While Marshall and Widdop were the stars of the show, NSW Origin hopeful Tyson Frizell did his chances of wearing the Blues jersey at ANZ Stadium on May 27 no harm, producing another barnstorming performance.
