Joel Gillard, 19, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on a raft of charges stemming from an alleged crime spree at the weekend in which he is also accused of attacking a taxi driver with a tomahawk and robbing a service station.

The Biggera Waters teenager was refused bail and remanded in custody to reappear on May 20, on charges including two counts of robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop and unlawful use of motor vehicle.

Gillard and a woman who remains at large, Sarah Jane Boyd, are alleged to have led police on an hour long pursuit from Surfer's Paradise to Pacific Pines about 9pm Sunday.

He is alleged to have rammed multiple police cars, driven on the wrong side of the road and driven at police while throwing objects from the window at them, which prompted them to shoot at his Toyota Landcruiser.

Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Des Lacy said the road spikes were used after tomahawks and hammers were thrown at police from the moving car.

"At one point in Pacific Pines the alleged offenders rammed a police vehicle and drove at two police who were forced to discharge their service weapons," Acting Superintendent Lacy told News Corporation.

The car crashed into a fence shortly after and Gillard allegedly fled the scene on foot with Ms Boyd.

The dog squad and PolAir aided the ground search and the teenager was apprehended.

The dramatic pursuit began after police attempted to intercept the car, which they suspected of involvement in the attempted robbery of a service station on Saturday night.

Gillard has also been charged over an attack on a 50-year-old taxi driver on Saturday night, in which the driver suffered a head injury when hit in the head with a tomahawk.

He has been remanded in custody to reappear on Wednesday.
