The Bureau of Meteorology announced a fire warning last week for the North West as a result of dry conditions, asking travellers and residents to take care and beware of bushfires after two fires occurred in the Gulf.
The new team of four Mornington Island trainee firefighters have been working hard to put out the two fires in the area of Gununa.
The Rural Fire Brigade team were formed to help improve Mornington Island firefighting response times in the isolated region, while developing team building skills.
Mornington Shire Council’s workplace health and safety co-ordinator has advised residents to clear space around buildings and homes, clear and remove undergrowth near buildings and fill in any gaps around windows, door frames and eaves.
They also advised residents to rake up bark, leaves and twigs, and to make sure properties have clear access for fire trucks.
