Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller said the government's newest road safety campaign would focus on children, getting schools on board to talk about the road rules.

"We want children across Queensland to learn about issues such as speeding, and we want them to know the road rules from a very early age," she told Parliament on Wednesday.

"We also want to encourage children, so that if they are driving in a car with their parents, or another adult who they think is speeding, they are able to say, 'have a look at your speedo'.

"We are particularly concerned that, if parents are using mobile phones, or other gadgets, children can say to mum or dad, 'please put that mobile phone away. Please stop using that mobile phone'."

The government had previously announced it was adding texting while driving to its list of double demerit point offences for repeat offenders, with distraction now considered one of the most frequent causes of road crashes.

"We know that there are some people who just cannot help but get on Facebook, if they are stuck at a red light," Ms Miller said.

"We are saying to the people of Queensland, when you are driving, do not go on Facebook or use your mobile phones. Do not check messages, do not do any of this."

Training for police officers will also be expanded, to help them "detect and deter broader criminal activities," while on the road, including additional drug driving operations.
