Her story seems simple; farmers versus miners.

Shay's farm is one of 34 near Hopeland that is battling two large mining operations.

However her family is battling Origin Energy over their coal seam gas expansion, carbon monoxide under her farm's soils, underground coal fires, the Queensland Government bureaucracy and the perception any farmer raising their voice is a whinging troublemaker.

Linc Energy who were running a trial underground coal gasification project nearby at Chinchilla have been "decommissioning" that plant since October 2013.

Origin Energy calls the land its Petroleum Lease 272. They plan to sink 170 wells to explore for coal seam gas in the next 12 months.

Shay Dougall, mother of two boys aged three and six, describes it as "God's own country" and rich farming land.

She just hopes someone in government will listen to them.

Hopeland is part of the Darling Downs which supports cotton, sorghum, wheat and barley, with some pigs, sheep and beef thrown into the mix.

On Thursday morning she presents a petition from Hopeland farming families to Queensland senators Glenn Lazarus and Larissa Waters (Queensland Greens) hoping either of them will listen.

"We are about 20 kilometres outside of Chinchilla, but out locality is called Hopeland," she said.

"It is just God's own country and it is very precious."

This month 34 of the 40 families in Hopeland said they did not want coal seam gas companies to have access to their properties.

That is the petition she will present Thursday morning outside Queensland's Parliament House.

But Shay's story is only the tip of a complex story.

It includes an underground coal fire near her property at Hopeland, months of soil and water quality testing about carbon monoxide bubbling to the surface from two metres beneath the surface of their farms.

Queensland's Environment Department now believes the underground coal fire is no longer burning.

"On current evidence, EHP remains confident that there is no ongoing underground coal fire burning in the Hopeland and Chinchilla area," a spokesman said.

The cause of the toxic gas release is soon to be released, he said.

"The department is waiting on final confirmation from independent scientific experts before categorically defining the contamination's source and extent," he said.

Since 2013, Hopeland has also been part of Queensland's Strategic Cropping Land area, which should give landowners stronger rights to argue against mining companies because their farming land is so valuable.

"It is listed by the government as priority agricultural land, which means it should agriculture as the priority for land use."

Shay Dougall says Hopeland farmers - some of which are five-generation farming families - cannot understand why they are in the position they find themselves.

They are also worried about the impact of coal seam mining on their stock bores.

"If you look at any map that any government department has, or Origin or any other coal seam gas company, they will show you that it is still strategic cropping land," Shay Dougall said.

"It should mean that this finite land should not be damaged."

However the petroleum lease was approved six months before the Strategic Crossing Land legislation was passed, rejected and replaced by similar legislation, she said.

Shay Dougall said neither the current government, nor the previous government were giving farming families the same respect as coal seam gas companies.

"If they allow coal seam gas mining on strategic cropping land, they will lose it."

What the state government says

The Department of Natural Resources said their coal seam gas investigations showed problems in five stock bores near Hopeland.

"To date, issues have been formally raised by three landholders in the Hopeland area associated with increasing gas in five water bores," a spokesman said.

"Investigations found that two of these bores had problems that may be attributable to CSG activities."

However the spokesman said the coal seam gas industry had not expanded as quickly as expected.

An independent Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment (OGIA) produces an annual Surat Underground Water Impact Report.

"It is too early in the development of the industry to detect any clear water pressure impacts in aquifers resulting from CSG water extraction," the spokesman said.

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection said more recent tests on the soil and water quality showed no gas levels had reached concerning levels.

"Investigations began when soil testing in early February 2015 showed gases including carbon monoxide, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide at depths of between two and six metres," a spokesman said.

"The gases discovered are commonly those produced through combustion and are not gases associated with coal seam gas development."

"EHP reiterates that air and water quality in the Hopeland and Chinchilla region remains safe and no contaminants exceeding relevant guidelines have been detected in any of the numerous air, water, and soil samples taken."
