Chairman of the Tennant Creek Mount Isa Cross Border Alliance was in Mount Isa this week and addressed members of Commerce North West about the proposal at a business lunch.
Mr Newman was optimistic that the Tenant Creek to Mount Isa route was the most viable option as four proponents await the outcome of a selection panel in September.
Commerce North West president Travis Crowther said he appreciated having the alliance in Mount Isa to share their story.
“The feedback from our members is that they are keen to progress with the alliance and are eager to assist”, Mr Crowther said.
He said the Mount Isa business sector can assist by staying positive, and helping to identify opportunities where Tennant Creek and Mount Isa can work together to create great synergies and develop economic opportunities.
Mr Newman held the attention of his audience with his passion and enthusiasm for the project during the business lunch with Commerce North West members welcoming the ideas that were being generated.
“Three of the four proponents have told us that the Tenant Creek to Mount Isa route was their preferred option,” Mr Newman said.
“We are lobbying for the successful company to use local labour, and provide support and services to the project.”
The successful proponent is expected to be announced in September, followed by 12 months of planning, before the nine-month project would commence.
If the Tennant Creek to Mount Isa option is chosen, there is also the opportunity of developing a Gas Processing Plant in Mount Isa, bringing increased industry, employment and creating opportunities in the long term for gas through the region.
