NSW is looking to obtain a revolutionary cryotherapy chamber, like the one coach Laurie Daley is pictured in during his US study trip, as part of their preparations for the interstate series.

During his stop at Red Bull, Daley stepped into a chamber that dropped to -146 degrees celsius, which is 57 degrees colder than the lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth, in Antarctica in 1983. The cryotherapy treatment is believed to be a quicker and more effective recovery aid than traditional ice baths and users often report enjoying a more restful sleep afterwards.

In an age where there is so little between the teams – the Blues finally broke Queensland's Origin stranglehold with a 6-4 win in game two last year – the chamber could provide an edge that could again prove the difference.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has his own chamber at home, but their hefty size and price – they sell for about $250,000 – has limited their use in Australia.

"It's something different for the boys; we're thinking about getting one," said the NSWRL's general manager of football, Barrie-Jon Mather.

"It's a chamber with liquid nitrogen. Instead of getting in an ice bath for three minutes, getting out, getting back in and getting out, you get in for two minutes – three if you want to tough it out like Laurie – and then that's it, you're done.

"You sleep like a baby afterwards. You don't feel cold, but all your hair is frozen over. Afterwards, at least for me, you feel like you stay a lot colder for a lot longer. If it makes a difference mentally, then that can give you that 1 per cent [edge]. If it makes you feel better ... "

Mather, a former dual international, was part of England's brains trust when cryotherapy was introduced as part of their Test preparations three years ago. England coach Steve McNamara said the chambers have been invaluable to his program.

"It's a really effective way of recovering after tough and physical training and games," McNamara said.

"Our players have really benefited from it and enjoyed it. We've found it also benefits sleep; they sleep really well on the back of that treatment.

"It's not something that will win you State of Origin on its own, but it's part of the preparation if you want to add value to your program.

"It's a fun experience for the players the first time you go in and we quite clearly saw the benefits of using it over a period of time."

NSW have shown a willingness to embrace technology for their current campaign. The players were spotted wearing revolutionary bio-patches during their Coffs Harbour camp. The patches, which are worn on the arm, use skin temperature and sweat levels to record sleep patterns, stress levels and other key physical indicators of wellness. The bio-patches were introduced by sports scientist Craig Duncan, whose client list includes NBA franchise Washington Wizards and English Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Daley is also looking to implementing other ideas he picked up during a study tour of the US, which included visits to baseball, NBA and NFL powerhouses.

The Blues had used a data-management product from British-based company QlikView, which also offers the service to Chelsea FC. However, they have switched to one provided by Fusion Sport, which is also being utilised across the border in camp Maroon. The system allows Daley and his staff to access player data quickly in an integrated format.
