Senior Sergeant Irwin was the officer in charge at Caboolture Police Station when he was shot dead in nearby bushland on August 22, 2003.

His killer, troubled 21-year-old Damien Coates, then turned the gun on himself.

On Sunday, a new $9 million bridge crossing Lagoon Creek at Brown Street, near where Senior Sergeant Irwin was killed, will be officially named the Perry Irwin Bridge.

Moreton Bay mayor Allan Sutherland said it was a fitting tribute to the fallen officer.

"Senior Sergeant Perry Irwin's death was a terrible tragedy for his wife and children, the officers he served with and the community he protected and was very much a part of," he said.

"I hope the naming of Perry Irwin Bridge will serve as a daily reminder of his bravery and service to our community."

The two-lane, four span bridge also had a shared pedestrian and bike pathway.

Queensland Police Service southern region assistant commissioner Tony Wright said, almost 12 years after his death, Senior Sergeant Irwin's bravery was remembered by colleagues in the QPS.

"Senior Sergeant Perry Irwin paid the ultimate price for his commitment, dedication and courage to serving the people of Queensland," he said.

"His act of bravery should never be underestimated nor forgotten by the people he worked with and the community he served in the Caboolture area."

The state government contributed $2 million to the construction of the bridge, which local MP Rick Williams said demonstrated its "commitment to deliver better, safer and more connected cycling infrastructure".

A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesman said the Perry Irwin Bridge was expected to reduce travel times and ease traffic congestion in the area.

Senior Sergeant Irwin has also had a police house for emergency accommodation and a police patrol boat named in his honour.
