In the beginning of May, five students travelled to Townsville to compete in the North Queensland Festival of One Act Plays (FOOAP).
GSCC drama teacher Anna Telford said the two-day festival gave students the chance to do a technical workshop along with competing.
“The one act plays and 10 minute performances by schools and adult groups covered a wide range of topics and showcased some very talented actors, directors and script writers,” she said.
“Good Shepherd Catholic College performed Sue Murray’s play Word Play. The adjudicator said that the students had good subtext, very good ensemble work and commitment to character.
“For our efforts we won Second Place in the Junior Section
“Jake Wylie won Best Junior Male Actor and Ryan Telford was nominated for Best Director.
“This is the second year in a row that Good Shepherd has won the best Junior Male Actor.
“There is no doubt that we are a team to contend with.”
The two day event provided some unique learning through technical and acting workshops.
The technical workshop gave them the experience of behind the scenes positions of stage manager, sound and lighting.
“This year we were shown the sound and lighting boards and how special effects can be achieved as well as regaled with tales of near misses, system crashes and unorganised directors,” she said.
“The acting workshop with Kris Stewart, the adjudicator, was focused on the skills required for auditioning and directing.”
