Five suburban footballers have escaped suspension after being found guilty of breaching AFL Victoria's social media policy.

The female players with Deer Park Football Club were facing a two-week ban over comments they made on Facebook earlier this month.

An AFL Victoria independent tribunal found the five Deer Park players guilty of breaching the competition's social media policy, but opted to issue the women with a warning last Tuesday.

Deer Park coach Colin Clohesy said the players had received a "thorough education" in social media as a result.

"The process was good, they got a good hearing," he said.

"They now know that you can't use Facebook as a means of idol chitchat among yourselves, because it is a public domain."

Mr Clohesy said the five players had never intended to cause "any grief" in making comments about the physicality of their game against Mordialloc Football Club on May 10.

However, the Victorian Women's Football League said the comments made by the Deer Park players went far beyond references to the physicality of the game and were "likely to offend and impact negatively on those referred to in the posts".

The league said its social media policy played an important role in stamping out online bullying.

"[It is] an issue which has become increasingly prominent in society and has no place in football," the league said.

The division three Deer Park women's team plays Bayswater this weekend.
