Mick Malthouse's record-breaking coaching career is expected to end within a fortnight, with Carlton bringing forward its decision on the beleaguered senior coach.

Malthouse met club president Mark LoGiudice and chief executive Steven Trigg on Monday and was told he would officially learn his fate after the Blues' round 10 clash with Adelaide at the MCG.

Although the club remains adamant it has not yet made a call, Malthouse will be told his contract will not be renewed beyond this season. The prevailing view is that he will then quit immediately, with Dean Laidley the current favourite to replace him as interim coach should that happen.

Carlton bosses were furious at Malthouse's decision to break ranks last Thursday – he suggested the club decision to speak publicly about a rebuild had created a "mental burden" for many of his players, one they were still battling to overcome – and it is understood there was a push to sack him on the eve of the Friday night game against Geelong.

LoGiudice communicated a message to club members late on Monday explaining the club's reasons for moving early on Malthouse.

"Our CEO, Steven Trigg and myself met with Mick Malthouse today, and agreed that in the best interests of the club, we would make a decision on the future direction of our senior coaching position in the week of the bye, which is round 11," LoGiudice told members in a letter.

"Mick supports our revised timeline and has again committed to stay the course. We are very mindful of the speculation surrounding the senior coaching role and the impact it is having. Out of care for all concerned, we believe it is best to make a decision sooner than previously indicated and that the bye round represents an appropriate time," he added.

"We will take the next few weeks to review the future of the senior coach position before making an informed and rational decision to take Carlton forward."

"As I have now said on numerous occasions, the days of quick fixes are behind us. Our approach to this very important decision will be methodical and considered. This is about making the right decision the right way, in an orderly manner that is right for Carlton."

The chairman finished by promising to "navigate through this and restore pride to our Old Dark Navy Blues".

In Monday's meeting with Malthouse, several scenarios were discussed but while the coach and his manager Peter Sidwell reportedly remain frustrated at the Blues' procrastination on the coach's future, LoGiudice and Trigg insisted no final decision had been reached.

In another twist in the soap-operatic Carlton saga, it emerged on Monday AFL Coaches Association chairman John Worsfold had moved to assure members that he was not currently seeking a senior coaching position although he did not close the door on returning to a senior role.

Worsfold pledged to resign his AFLCA chairmanship should he change his mind.

This followed some significant disgruntlement within the senior AFL ranks after Worsfold — a favourite for the Blues job — stated publicly he would still be keen to coach.  Worsfold, who coached West Coast from 2002 until 2013 and won the 2006 premiership, wrote recently to the senior coaches to clarify his comments.

Some coaches felt Worsfold's apparent move to put his hand up had been inappropriate.

"May I assure you all, I am not seeking a senior coaching position," wrote Worsfold, "and I do not know if I will ever be in a position to consider taking on this breathtaking and challenging role at any stage in the future. But who knows, maybe I will reach that point, one day. I have discussed the issue with Sticks (AFLCA boss Mark Brayshaw) over two weeks ago and categorically explained to him that I would resign immediately ... if I considered seeking a senior coaching position."
