Former West Coast coach John Worsfold has written  to the league's 18 coaches to assure them he will relinquish his duties as chairman of the AFL Coaches Association should he put his hand up for a senior coaching role in the future.

In a letter clarifying his position, the 46-year-old said he had not ruled out returning to coaching and compared his situation to that of Rodney Eade, who was unexpectedly lured to the Gold Coast late last year despite showing little interest in returning to the top job.

"May I assure you all, I am not seeking a senior coaching position and I don't know if I ever will be in a position to consider taking on this breathtaking and challenging role at any stage in the future," Worsfold said in the letter dated May 20.

"But who knows? Maybe I will reach that point, one day, of believing I again have the energy for the opportunity. I bet 'Rocket' [Eade] never thought he would," he said.

"I have discussed the issue with 'Sticks' (AFLCA CEO Mark Brayshaw) over two weeks ago and categorically explained to him that I would resign immediately from my position as chairman of the AFLCA if I considered seeking a senior coaching position or any club position."

Brayshaw was approached on Monday about the letter written by Worsfold, telling Channel Nine: "It's fair to say he is not ruling that out (coaching) in the future.

"It's reasonable to say the day he announces he's stepping down as chairman … he's on the market," he added.

"That hasn't happened and I can't see it happening for the foreseeable future."

Worsfold's letter was dated just days after the former Eagles premiership coach told Channel Seven that "if the opportunity was right and I felt ready to go back into that lifestyle, then I'd still be keen to do that", in relation to coaching, a job he has not performed for two years now.

Worsfold's name has been raised by the media in connection with a list of potential coaching candidates that might be considered by Carlton if they decide not to renew Mick Malthouse's contract, with former Blues president John Elliott one voice to have endorsed Worsfold's credentials publicly.
