Mr Roche said the previous LNP government’s Resources for the Regions program had strayed away from its original intent to provide social infrastructure to ensure resources communities were places where people were happy to live and work.
“Only a quarter of those funds ended up with resources communities, so it was quite understandable that a number of communities, including Mount Isa felt they had missed out,” said Mr Roche.
“Providing resources communities with the infrastructure and services taken for granted in our cities gives resources employees real choice about where they wish to live, and encourage people to live in regional Queensland. This is a point we made clearly in our submission to the Queensland Government’s inquiry into FIFO and other long distance commuting work practices in regional Queensland.”
“I was very pleased to see that Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham Building announced this week that $55 million would be allocated over two years to resource-producing communities to address impacts of resources sector development.”
