It seems a brazen move by CrownBet, given Fyfe's regular visits to the tribunal, but early payouts are often publicity stunts by betting agencies to gain customers.

The 23-year-old missed four games last year through two suspensions and was lucky to escape with just a fine after tripping Western Bulldogs player Koby Stevens in round 7 this year.

Fyfe is currently paying $2.25 to win the Brownlow, with Eagles Matt Priddis a paddock behind on $11.

Once you look at Fyfe's stats so far in 2015, CrownBet might be on the money:

Round 1 v Port: 31 possessions, 1 goal
Round 2 v Geelong: 36 possessions, 3 goals
Round 3 v Eagles: 31 possessions
Round 4 v Swans: 27 possessions, 1 goal
Round 5 v Melbourne: 30 possessions, 1 goal

Given Fyfe's flowing locks have attracted the attention of the umpires in the past, the Dockers swingman could be sitting on anywhere between 18-21 votes, given Fremantle is undefeated so far in 2015.

And with last year's winner - Eagles midfielder Matt Priddis - polling just 25 votes (Fyfe finished second on 24 but was ineligible because of suspension), Fyfe needs only a couple more decent games to have Charlie in the bag.

But the bookies don't always get it right.

In 2010, Sportsbet famously paid out on Richmond wining the wooden spoon after the Tigers started the season with nine straight loses before a late-season surge saw them finish above eventual wooden spooners West Coast.

And Sportsbet had a close call with the Brownlow in 2013, paying out on Gary Ablett after round 18. He didn't poll another vote for the year but managed to just pip Geelong teammate Joel Corey by a vote.

CrownBet's CEO Matt Tipp said the booking agency decided to pay out on Fyfe because this year's Brownlow was simply a one-horse race.

Fyfe started the season paying $5.50.

He said CrownBet had paid out a "decent six-figures" on all bets place on Fyfe from midnight on May 26.

"We believe Fyfe is a long way in front of the pack, and given the form he's in will continue to poll votes," Mr Tripp said.

"He's had an unbelievable start to the season and it seems a formality that we'd be paying out on him in September anyway, so punters might as well enjoy their cash now."

CrownBet has just released a few interesting novelty bets involving Fyfe:

•         Fyfe is paying $2.50 to score more Brownlow votes this season than every Carlton player combined.
•         He is also paying $2.50 to score more votes this season than Dane Swan's modern-day record of 34 in 2011.
•         $3.25 is on offer for Fyfe to record more three-vote matches this season than Greg Williams' modern-day record of nine in 1994
