More than 80 years ago, a former Victorian premier's bid to overturn his expulsion from the Labor Party was rejected by the High Court. Explicating, Justice Hayden Starke said: "As a general rule, the courts do not interfere in the contentions or quarrels of political parties, or indeed, in the internal affairs of any voluntary association, society or a club."
