Details of the contract extension are still to be finalised but Gallen and the club are understood to have agreed on the value of the deal, which includes an exemption for long service.

Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman said the Sharks had wanted to ensure Gallen remained a one-club player and hoped to make an official announcement soon.

"Nothing has been signed off on at the moment but we are very optimistic that will happen soon," Gorman said.

"There has been some great progress made in negotiations and we have always made it clear from day one that Gal is an incredibly valuable part of our club's history and future. At this stage nothing has been finalised but the signs are very positive."

In a further boost for the Sharks, Gallen is on track for a comeback this weekend from the hip injury that has sidelined the 33-year-old forward for six weeks and prevented him captaining NSW in last Wednesday night's Origin series opener.

If he is available, Gallen will be a certain selection for Origin II at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 17.

"Gal is a chance, we will wait and see how he trains tomorrow but he could be trotting out there," Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said.

"He is running really good, he is running at top speed so it is all about impact now, copping some whacks and wrestling on the ground and carrying a few blokes on his back when he is carrying that football.

"He is getting close, I am not saying he is going to be there on Sunday but he is definitely getting close. We won't be taking any risks with him, he needs to be 100 per cent.

"Gal needs to come to us and tell us he is ready to play,  the medical team need to tell us he is right to play. If Gal doesn't play on Sunday against the Dragons I would like to have my house on it that he will trot out against the Roosters the following week at home."

Prop Andrew Fifita has been mentioned as the player who may make way for Gallen in the NSW team after receiving just 27 minutes in Origin I and Flanagan said he needed to perform well against the Dragons and Roosters to prove he deserved to retain his position.

"He is probably a little bit disappointed about the time he got but I thought the other two front-rowers in the Origin did a really good job and that limited Andrew's time," he said.

"It is a real test for Andrew to come back and play well for the Sharks the next two weeks and makes sure he gets picked in Origin II."

Meanwhile, Gorman said a mid-season move by disgruntled Shark Michael Gordon to Parramatta would not happen.

Gordon had consulted the Rugby League Players Association after believing he had been given permission to make the switch and was last week given time off training but will line up in Sunday's match against the Dragons.

"He is playing on the weekend and is back in full training so that is the end of the matter," Gorman said.
