Former Greyhound Racing Queensland deputy chair Steve Hawkins has rejected suggestions at an inquiry that he had prior knowledge of live baiting in the sport.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon told the Queensland Government's commission of inquiry that Mr Hawkins told him, in the wake of a Four Corners investigation into live baiting, he was aware of possums being used to blood greyhounds.

"Since the Four Corners program it has also become apparent to me that Steve Hawkins, a former member of the Queensland Greyhound Racing Board, may have been aware of live baiting practices," Condon said in a statement to the commission.

"During a telephone conversation shortly after the Four Corners program was aired, Mr Hawkins said words to me, to the effect of 'I knew they were using possums but I didn't know anything about pigs'."

"Shortly after that conversation I informed the members of the Board of Racing Queensland by telephone and the board as a whole at a subsequent meeting."

Mr Hawkins said while he couldn't remember the exact conversation his comments would only have been general.

"I think I said I had heard of people using possums but that statement read like I knew about those who were featured in the Four Corners program," he said. 

"That's the problem with the industry.

"A lot of people have heard of live baiting.

"They've not particularly been involved but they have heard. It was a broad comment."

Mr Condon said the organisation received an anonymous complaint about Mr Hawkins in March and he was now the subject of an ongoing investigation.

Mr Hawkins said he was interviewed over the phone in relation to that complaint, centring on his greyhound Queen Lauryn but was not aware that any inquiry was ongoing.

"I asked them (Racing Queensland) that question (after reading the commission submission)," he said.

"I didn't know it was ongoing."

The veteran racing broadcaster resigned on April 2 to focus on other business interests as well as a refusal to sign the state body's proposed statutory declaration, requiring trainers to declare they have had no kind of knowledge of live baiting. 

"There are a number of people in the industry both high profile and low profile who probably shouldn't have signed them," he said.

Mr Hawkins was appointed chair of the Greyhound Australasia Welfare Working Party last year, naming increased information collection and greater transparency as key priorities for the industry.

Mr Hawkins said the greyhound board had never received any correspondence from Racing Queensland or Mr Condon on the subject of live baiting.

In his statement to the commission, Mr Condon listed three instances of complaints of possible live baiting dating back to January 2011.

The most recently investigated complaint before February, Mr Condon said, was from the Bundaberg Greyhound Club about the use of guinea pigs being used to "blood" greyhounds.

Condon said that none of the instances complained were found to have visible evidence of live baiting and as such no action was taken and that until February 11, Racing Queensland was not aware of the practice as it was shown on the program.

Mr Condon maintained that a series of emails from Animal Liberations Queensland campaign manger Hayley Cotton on the subject of greyhound welfare had been overlooked.

The result of the commission inquiry, led by Alan MacSporran QC, will be handed down on June 1.
