A 74-year-old woman is dead and an older man fighting for his life after a car smashed into a power pole north of Brisbane.

The fatal crash took place just before 5.50pm Wednesday on Old Gympie Road at Burpengary, near Caboolture.
The female passenger died at the scene but paramedics were able to pull the male driver, believed to be in his 80s, to safety.
He was rushed to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and appealing for any witnesses.
Police are also looking for witnesses to a crash on the Gold Coast on Tuesday night.
A woman was hospitalised after a serious crash in Parkwood on the northern Gold Coast.
Police believe two cars collided just before 8pm at the intersection of Olsen Avenue and Wintergreen Drive.
Paramedics took a 42-year-old woman to the Gold Coast University Hospital with serious injuries.
