A loss prevention officer at the Pacific Fair shopping centre noticed a man pushing an item in a trolley out of the centre and confronted him.
The man then pushed the trolley at the officer, and jumped in the canal bordering the shopping centre.
Police were called and rescued the alleged thief, who had suffered an asthma attack after hitting the water.
The man was handed a notice to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on charges of stealing and obstructing police.
