The Mount Isa branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is screening a new feature documentary Meet the Mormons. 

Admission is free, but a gold coin donation is requested. 

All proceeds from the event are being given to the Mount Isa Branch of Australian Red Cross to be used for humanitarian relief in Nepal following the recent massive earthquake and aftershock in that country.

Mount Isa Red Cross president Kaye Whitworth encouraged everyone to help. 

‘‘Australians are known for their generosity in times of need. Every contribution helps,’’ she said.

The movie Meet the Mormons documents the lives of six Latter-day Saint families living in different parts of the world.  

Coincidentally, one of the families lives in Nepal and the movie shows images of magnificent buildings which have been destroyed since the documentary was filmed.

More than 8000 people lost their lives, with tens of thousands more seriously injured in the earthquake.  

More than 600,000 homes were destroyed and entire towns and villages were reduced to rubble and more than 1.6 million families are in need of shelter, safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.  

A massive relief effort has been in progress with relief agencies providing food, tents, clothing and counselling support.

Nepal Red Cross is supported by International Red Cross and Red Crescent partners, including Australia, and plays a vital role in the government’s disaster response plans.  

Some 7000 Nepal Red Cross volunteers have been part of the relief effort, with more being trained daily.

■Meet the Mormons will be screened from Wednesday, June 17, to Friday, June 19, at the church in Barton Street, starting at 6.30pm.
