Mount Isa City Council has arranged for the 18-carat gold cup to be on display for one day only, with the Melbourne Cup to venture underground to the one mile marker at Mount Isa Mines and then to the highest point at Black Star open-cut.
“What could be more fitting when an icon such as this visits Mount Isa, than to take it to Mount Isa’s most iconic features,” mayor Tony McGrady said. Apart from giving the community a chance to view the cup, it also gives it the opportunity to experience the atmosphere and anticipation of the Melbourne Cup.
There will be two chances to view this historical trophy in Mount Isa. The first is a family friendly event at Kruttschnitt Oval from 2-4pm, with activities and games for children and canteen facilities open to purchase snacks.
The second event will begin at 6pm, hosted by the Mount Isa Race Club at Buchanan Park, where a race bet will be held. The Emirates Melbourne Cup will be on display within the VIP area during this time.
“In Mount Isa we don’t do things by halves, we are tremendously grateful to be given the opportunity to host the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour and I know our residents will come out in force to support this amazing initiative that provides the local community the chance to get up close and personal with the famous trophy,” Cr McGrady said.
For a chance to win a trip for two to Flemington to view the ‘‘race that stops the nation’’, upload photos with the cup to the Victoria Racing Club’s social media platforms. Competition entries will only be valid if tagged with #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup.
