Sydney are likely to be without both forward pillars, Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett, for only the second time in their one and a half seasons at the club once the match review panel rules on the incidents they were cited for at the weekend.

Franklin and Tippett were each reported in the Swans' shock loss to Richmond on Friday night, Franklin for a high bump on Shane Edwards and Tippett for a crude, late spoil on Dylan Grimes.

Franklin's occurred as he pursued a ball that bounced off his chest as he spurned a marking opportunity on the lead. He had the opportunity to pick up the ball, but instead chose to deliver a bump to Edwards, who was approaching from the opposite direction. Franklin's left shoulder made contact with the Tiger's head, triggering his removal from the ground for a concussion test he ultimately passed.

Former Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson said he expected Franklin would be suspended.

"We saw Buddy [Franklin] take his eyes off the ball, which is the dangerous part ... the key indicator when the match review panel have a look at this one," Sanderson told AFL Game Day.

Sanderson lamented that the incident was not out of character for Franklin, alluding to the fact it was the fifth time he had been charged over a high bump over the past five years.

"We need Buddy out there, because he's a superstar, but unfortunately he just can't iron out these [breaches] ... I'll call it an accident but it looks like it was intentional," he said.

A classification of careless conduct - rather than intentional, as Franklin for the most part was pursuing the ball rather than Edwards - medium impact and high contact would trigger a two-match ban that could be cut to one with a guilty plea. An increase in either the conduct grading or the impact would add another match to the penalty, ensuring he would miss more than just Sydney's home match against Port Adelaide in the upcoming weekend.

Tippett's came as Grimes took a relieving defensive-50 mark. Tippett, who was attempting to mark but was too late to do so, raised his right arm and more contact with his forearm and, seemingly more so, his elbow to the head of the Richmond defender. Like Edwards, Grimes was able to finish the match.

Tippett could realistically receive the same grading, and therefore penalty, as Franklin: a one-match ban if he accepted the charge.

The only other time the Swans have missed both Franklin and Tippett came in round seven last year, when they thumped lowly Brisbane by 79 points.

Richmond's Nathan Gordon is likely to be charged with striking former teammate Kieren Jack after he ran past the ball and made contact with his elbow to the jaw of the Sydney co-captain. A classification of careless, low impact and high contact would trigger a $1500 fine that could be reduced to $1000, although if any the panel deems it worse than careless or low impact he would miss at least one match.
