The Matildas were shattered to be knocked out of the World Cup on Sunday morning but their success has been followed by most of this nation with an unprecedented level of interest. The Queensland Firebirds were promised a $30 million netball facility, the first of its kind in the state, a week after their thrilling grand final weekend. Queensland's women's rugby league team kept a 17-year unbeaten streak alive in their State of Origin match on Saturday. Female athletes are going great guns and beginning to get the attention they deserve.

In what has been a heart wrenching week for rugby league, the positive has been the unity the code has shown. Players and the crowd at Friday night's clash between Brisbane and Newcastle observed a minute's silence - with no interruptions - to honour James Ackerman and local clubs took part in the #takeakneeforackers tribute before each of their matches. The man himself has given life to others, donating his organs. The Queensland Rugby League has set up a trust fund for Ackerman's family. The details to donate:

3. Super Cooper to return

Cooper Cronk will be back for Origin III, Mal Meninga reckons. And thank Wally Lewis for that - we don't need to see the village burn at Suncorp Stadium. May his sinews come together as a whole in the July 8 decider. Also, his knee parts. Especially those.

Bad

1. Gold Coast Suns drug allegations

The Gold Coast are re-opening investigations into their playing group over revelations from former player Karmichael Hunt. After asking players to come forward in the wake of initial revelations in February but CEO Andrew Travis said no player had given extra information in those enquiries.They have drafted letters to Hunt's lawyers and the media outlet that published the information to try and obtain names, which were not published. Hunt reportedly paid for one lot of cocaine with another Suns player and he alleged that a number indulged in the drug while on end-of-season celebrations.

2. Origin injuries

Josh McGuire was on the verge of his home Origin debut and he's been struck down with an achilles injury. He spoke to the media after the match in a moon boot and on crutches, resigned to his fate. The Broncos prop will have the support of captain Justin Hodges and teammate Darius Boyd, both of whom have made comebacks from the same injury.

3. North Queensland without JT

The Cowboys blew an 18-0 lead to lose to Cronulla on the weekend, continuing a poor club record with no Johnathan Thurston in the side. After looking comfortable in the early stages, North Queensland fell apart and exposed their own major weakness.  The Queensland half back would be close to the most valuable player in the competition, if not number one. The Cowboys need to keep him fit and keep him in.

Bizarre

It was flashback Friday at Suncorp Stadium, or at least for the scoreboard. The pre-match graphics ran through the Knights players and coaches. Just one small thing - the graphic had Wayne Bennett listed as coach. It seems everyone wants to claim the master coach now that the Broncos are on top of the ladder. Luckily, it was simply a typo. Nothing to see here.
