Injured NSW hooker Robbie Farah plans to test his broken hand on Saturday as he continues to hold out hope of playing in the State of Origin decider.

Farah belatedly joined the rest of the Blues squad in camp on Wednesday night, having been told he was not allowed to fly earlier that day. Fairfax Media can reveal Farah had already taken his seat on the Virgin Australia flight before a flight attendant noticed his bandage and asked him what had happened.

When Farah – who was not recognised by the airline staff - indicated he had just had surgery he was told he was unable to fly for 24 hours without medical clearance. NSW doctor Nathan Gibbs provided Farah with that clearance that enabled him to fly out hours later.

Farah's would be replacement, Michael Ennis, also joined the Blues in Coffs Harbour on Thursday and trained with the squad for the first time after his unsuccessful appearance at the NRL judiciary the night before.

Farah said his hand had pulled up better than he had expected and that he hopes to return to the training paddock on Saturday, with the Blues squad having a training free day on Friday.

"I'm not in a lot of pain, which is surprising," Farah said. "I haven't had too many painkillers. I can grip already. I can shake hands, I can hold a footy. I'm a lot better than I thought it would be. That's nothing compared to what's expected of me on Wednesday night. I would have to improve a lot more.

"It would be important going into such a big game to do some training. Coming into game two with my shoulder injury, I felt it was important to train. It's one of the reasons I felt so confident going into the game because I had done all the training. I would like to do the same this time around. I'm a chance. If I didn't think I was a chance I wouldn't be here."

Farah said coach Laurie Daley had not placed a deadline on him to make a decision. Ryan Hinchcliffe was also added to the Blues squad but Ennis will end his Origin exile should Farah be ruled out.

Farah is now helping his one-time rival with his transition into the side.

"We are one big family in NSW," Farah said. "I've spoken to him. He needs to learn about the way we play and the calls. I'm there to help him as much as he needs. It's about getting the result.

"If I'm not there he needs to be able to go out there and do the role the team needs him to do. I ran him through some of the things we do in this team. If he does come into the side, he is an experienced player, he will be fine. That's why he has been called in. It would be tough to bring in a debutant.

"I haven't given up hope."
