Irish sensation Conor McGregor (19-2, 5-0 UFC) fights for the UFC interim featherweight title against American standout Chad Mendes (17-2, 8-2 UFC) at UFC  198 in Las Vegas next Sunday, a fight that could break pay per view records thanks largely to McGregor's rabid fan-base and his ability to sell a fight.

McGregor would prove a massive boost for Victoria's first UFC show following the overturning of the cage ban in the state, particularly if he is successful in capturing the interim belt, with champion Jose Aldo expected to be ready for action by late October.

However, during a UFC 189 conference call this week, the brash Irishman with the gift of the gab and a mean straight right said he wasn't interested in appearing on the card, which is expected to be held at either Rod Laver Arena or Etihad Stadium.

"You know, it does not appeal to me, it has no significance to me," he said.

"There's probably nobody on the roster that could fill a stadium right now except me, so to take that and put me in another country to try and fill a stadium, it doesn't really interest me."

UFC managing director of operations for Canada, Australia and New Zealand Tom Wright has consistently maintained that any event in Australia would likely feature at least one, and more likely two, championship fights in order to fill Etihad Stadium.

With no Australian UFC fighters within sight of a title shot, global drawcards like Ronda Rousey and McGregor would  be the perfect tonic, however it appears that for at least one half of that equation, the numbers just don't add up.
