Adelaide have appointed former Carlton and Essendon player Scott Camporeale as interim coach, following the death of Phil Walsh last Friday.

The Crows have also appointed former Eagles coach John Worsfold as coaching director, a full time role for the rest of 2015.

Worsfold, who worked alongside Walsh for five years at West Coast, will help support Adelaide's coaches through the second half of the season, stepping in after the death of his close friend.

Camporeale was Walsh's senior assistant and midfield coach, and will work as senior coach for the rest of the season.

The Crows approached Worsfold through chief executive Andrew Fagan on Sunday. The former West Coast coach had worked for a short time alongside Walsh early this year, getting to know the players and the game plan.

"John is a premiership coach who already has an understanding of our football program given he was briefly here on Walshy's invitation earlier this year," Fagan said.

"We are thrilled that he has agreed to join our club for the remainder of this season."

Fagan said Camporeale would help the players and other coaches continue on the path established by Walsh in his nine months at the club.

"We are all determined to continue pushing down that path, guided by his values of elite standards, hard work, attention to detail and a team-first attitude," he said.

"Scott is well supported by David Teague, Darren Milburn and Matthew Clarke, and now John Worsfold adds further experience and insight."

Paying tribute to his friend over the weekend, Worsfold spoke of Walsh's strong connection with the players he worked with.

He said Walsh had arrived at the Eagles wanting to become less stubborn, and told people to warn him when "Old Phil" was in the room.

"Some people found him abrupt because he didn't want to spend too much time doing things that he didn't love doing, but with the players his door was always open," he said on ABC Radio.

"When he first came to West Coast he had players flocking into his office to talk footy and not just footy, but life.

"Walshy had a great ability to regale great stories about different players and where they were from, and kids from country towns who made it. He always made the player he was currently speaking to feel like, I can make it at this level."

Worsfold also spoke of Walsh's obsession with strategy and tactics, and determination for the fans to be delivered football they would love to watch.

"He loved looking at opposition teams. He loved seeing opposition teams doing something new, because he'd try and then work out what they were doing," he said.

"He'd try and work out what benefit are they getting out of doing that, how's it going to challenge us, is it something we should start looking at doing because it's going to have implications on the game?

"I was so rapt when I heard he got the Adelaide job. I never, ever expected that he would apply for it and I don't even know if he actually applied for it.

"I think maybe the invitation came from Adelaide and I'm so rapt that they thought, why don't we talk to this guy who is so well respected in the industry, why don't we see if he wants to coach?"
