The Commonwealth’s agriculture White Paper, released on Saturday, includes a proposed investment of $500 million in water infrastructure and dams and $100 million in rural research and development.

‘‘Queensland agriculture is already a $15 billion a year industry and investment in new water infrastructure and R&D will ensure that grows,’’ said AgForce general president Grant Maudsley in a statement.

Mr Maudsley called for bipartisan support for the plan and Queensland’s opposition said the paper’s release was a ‘‘great day for the agriculture sector’’.

Opposition agriculture spokeswoman Deb Frecklington said it was good to see the sector being given the priority it deserved.

State Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne also welcomed the plan, but warned everyone not to get too carried away about it.

He said the federal government had not consulted the states and there was as yet no detailed implementation plan, meaning  it may not even get off the ground.

‘‘In 10 years our industry could be left in no better position,’’ Mr Byrne said.

‘‘The real fear here is that the federal coalition government is providing false hope to our farmers at a time when they need real and tangible results and not grand motherhood statements.’’
