NSW coach Laurie Daley was happy with the performance of referees Ben Cummins and Gerard Sutton in Origin II but there are concerns within the Blues camp ahead of Wednesday night's series decider over the fact that they have won just one penalty count in the last 11 matches at Suncorp Stadium.

After beating Queensland 26-18 at the MCG three weeks ago, NSW are seeking their first win in a series decider at Suncorp Stadium since 2005 – the year before the Maroons' eight-year domination of the interstate series began.

The Blues have not enjoyed much more success with referees in Brisbane either, with statistics provided by Champion Data showing they have won the penalty count just once since 2006 at the famous venue.

On that occasion, in the 2011 decider, the penalty count was 4-3 in favour of NSW but they lost the match 34-24.

The penalty count in the third game of the 2007 series, won 18-14 by the Blues, was seven apiece, while Queensland have had the better of the refereeing decisions in nine of the other 10 games played at Suncorp Stadium since 2006.

Until the opening match of last season's series, NSW had not won a game in Brisbane for seven years.

"It is a difficult place to win, we haven't won a decider up there for 10 years and I don't think we have won too many deciders up there at all," Daley said.

"We have got to be more focused than we have ever been, we have got to be more hungrier than we have ever been because that is what it is going to take to win up there."

The Blues have also not won a penalty count in the opening two matches of this year's series, much to the frustration of the NSW players and coaching staff who feel penalties should have been awarded for high shots by Cameron Smith on Mitchell Pearce and Nate Myles on David Klemmer in Origin I and Justin Hodges on Ryan Hoffman in Origin II.

The NSW camp has also questioned why Smith, the Maroons skipper, has been allowed to regularly approach the match officials when the NRL restricts captains talking to referees in scheduled stoppages and at the half-time interval.

After seeking a meeting with NRL referees boss Tony Archer and head of football Todd Greenberg before Origin II, Daley said he was happier with the way Cummins and Sutton had controlled the match at the MCG.

"I still thought there were some areas that we didn't agree on but I thought they refereed it much better than they did in Game I," Daley said. "They were much better compared to Game I.

"We just want to be able to compete on an even keel. If it is a game where it is open we think we can win that. If it is a game where there is a short 10 metres we think we can win that so the interpretations need to be consistent. As long as they are consistent we are happy but we want to see a good game of footy."
