A 13-man squad predominantly comprising players from Mount Isa Rugby Union club Warrigals will compete in a rugby sevens-style tournament.
Warrigals team manager Tom Robertson said this year’s team has a good chance of being more successful than the last one.
“The team is probably a bit better this year,” Robertson said.
“We definitely have less props playing, which will help.”
Teams from Townsville, Hughenden, Richmond, and Prairie will make up the competition for the one-day event.
When asked about the other teams, Robertson was quick to point out the likely favourites.
“The Townsville teams are usually strong. They put on a great grand final last year. They have genuine sevens player and touch players who are more structured.”
Robertson said the team will be looking to enjoy the experience rather than focus on the results.
“We head into it for a bit more of a social weekend away and enjoy ourselves a bit more.
‘‘It’s also starting to generate interest for the new union season nice and early.”
The format of the tournament will consist of two groups where each team in a group will play each other once.
The teams will then be ranked in their own groups and will then play their equivalent placing team of the other group for silverware.
Great Western Games rugby sevens organiser Sam Fryer said this particular format gives every team participating a chance.
“It makes it more interesting and everyone has a shot at silverware,” Fryer said.
TEAM LIST: Guillaume Botha, Cameron McKerrow, Casey Kempson, Craig Lansdowne, Dylan Buckingham, Nicholas Cooke, Brandon McConachy, Brenton Cole, Luke Crumblin, Josh Wagner, James George, Scott Watson.
