Call us old-fashioned, but some things never should have changed.

The AFL got too clever by half with its scheduling and ticketing, presuming the supporters would obediently fall into line. Hence the AFL's attempt this season to win back the public through "fan engagement" and more family-friendly timeslots for matches.

So here are a few suggestions to bring the people back to the game.

1. Reduce the ticket price

At $25 a ticket, punters could see Ant-Man in 3D for less.

If Melbourne and Carlton fans are to be expected to brave the wind and drizzle to watch their teams lose week-in, week-out, they should do so with change for a $20 note.
 

2. Bring back the curtain-raiser

Two games for the price of one. The match between the Melbourne and Western Bulldogs' women's teams showcased some great football earlier this year. Make it a weekly event.

3. Play at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon

This timeslot was a tradition for a reason – because it made sense.

No-one wants to rush on the weekend. Take the kids to their trumpet lessons, Auskick and children's pilates and still get to the game with time to spare.

Or sleep in, go out for a lazy brunch and fit in a sneaky beer on the way to the 'G.

4. Bring back Fitzroy

How good is it when you catch a fan in one of those old Fitzroy Lions jumpers?

The suburb is booming as apartment blocks shoot up. Give them back their football team.

5. Leave the fireworks to the players

I like Richmond's drummers, I do.

But like lipstick on a pig, laser shows and T-shirt guns cannot cover for a halting, low-skilled game. If anything, the gimmicks make the whole experience feel even more flimsy.

Fix the stoppages and give the marketing teams a break.
