Anthony Mundine has thrown his support behind Adam Goodes, urging the Sydney Swans star to "stay strong" amid the ongoing booing controversy.

Mundine took to Facebook on Wednesday night to declare that he was standing "100% behind Adam Goodes" who has endured weeks of booing and taunts from opposition AFL crowds.

Goodes has been granted extended leave from the game, and won't be playing in this weekend's clash against Adelaide, after he was booed by sections of the West Coast crowd in Perth on Sunday.

On Thursday, it was unclear if he would play again.

Mundine advised the dual Brownlow medallist to continue playing AFL, telling him to "leave on your terms".

"I wanna say I stand 100% behind Adam Goodes! It should motivate you to be better then you already are," he wrote.

"Don't let it get to you bra & talk bout retirement! Leave on your terms!

"We as blacks will always be looked at as inferior! Well we ain't inferior we all are all human beings & equal."

In a follow-up post, the controversial boxer called on all indigenous athletes to show their support for Goodes by doing a war cry dance.

On Wednesday, Goodes was granted indefinite leave from the club.

Swan chief executive Andrew Ireland said on Thursday he could not guarantee if Goodes would continue to play.

"Hopefully with a few more days off he'll be better and want to come back and get back into his footy," Ireland said.

"We're not certain of that, my current view is he will come back and play in the remainder of this season but to be frank I couldn't be certain about it.

"No one at the club in the discussions we've had with him have talked about retirement. It's just simply been needing a bit of time away from footy and that's a view the club supports."

Goodes has received significant support from other AFL clubs and players, with Richmond the first to make a formal on-field gesture in their Friday night clash with Hawthorn.

The Tigers will don their Dreamtime guernseys for the match, with chief executive Brendon Gale urging fans to wear theirs as a sign of support.

Players are also urging fans to "call out" racist behaviour at AFL games.

The players are poised to unite in a social media stand and take other avenues supporting Goodes. While some on-field gestures or actions remain on the table, the players have ruled out more drastic game day protests – such as a collective sit down or walk off – in games in which Goodes is booed.

On Wednesday, AFL Players Association chief executive Paul Marsh implored football fans to report any booing of Goodes.

This comes after a woman who reported a West Coast fan at Domain Stadium on Sunday – for saying Goodes should "get back to the zoo" – said she left the game at half time after others in the crowd criticised her for "dobbing".

Various ideas that were put forward by player representatives on Tuesday about what the entire playing group can do to actively show its support for the Sydney champion – and what teams might do on-field in the case that Goodes continues to be taunted – are being considered.

Other football codes have also shown their support, with North Queensland co-captain Johnathan Thurston planning to perform indigenous dances at upcoming games.
