The Mount Isa Rural Fire Brigade first officer Kim Smith said auxiliary firefighters were reducing hazards in the Leichhardt Riverbed.
Two units from the Rural Fire Service and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service were attending the fire near Alma Street.
"The fire is there to perform a hazard reduction burn - we have a permit - we are using it to minimise the amount of fuel loading in the creek," she said.
