The Fred Brophy Boxing Troupe is set to entertain Mount Isa once again during rodeo time, with popular fighters Beaver, the Butcher from Birdsville, The Micro Muller, Kid Goanna, Barramundi Kid, Brown Bomber and Dook ready to take on the best Mount Isa has to offer.
Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe owner Fred Brophy said the challenge is on offer for anyone in the town — whether they are male or female – who wants to have a fight.
‘‘The people who we would really like to fight this year and my blokes would like to fight, are the bouncers around Mount Isa,’’ he said.
‘‘I have heard they are the best fighters in town.’’
Mr Brophy said has been coming back to Mount Isa for more than 30 years to entertain the town with an Australian iconic event.
‘‘They call this town the salad bowl,’’ he said.
‘‘You have locals, miners, cowboys, ringers, Aboriginals and you get tourists and they are all like each other,’’ he said.
‘‘That is why I call it a salad bowl.’’
‘‘You don’t get a combination like that anywhere else in Australia.’’
Putting on an entertaining show is why Mr Brophy has continued the fourth generation family business, and even though it is the last boxing tent in the world, he plans to keep it going for as long as he can.
‘‘We are not here to hurt anyone, just put a great show on,’’ he said.
‘‘If fighters win they get $30 a minute, if they draw they get nothing, and if they lose they get the experience.’’
This year, the Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe will be held in the Isa Hotel car park on Wednesday with two sessions and one session on Thursday.
They will also be at the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo on Friday and Saturday running two sessions a day.
